One in four people gets shingles in their lifetime, and the risk rises steeply after 50. The rash is painful, and in some people the pain lasts months or years afterwards. Shingrix cuts the risk of shingles by around 90 per cent and stays effective for at least ten years.
The NHS offers the vaccine to people turning 65 and 70, and to anyone aged 50 and over with a severely weakened immune system. If you are 50 or over and not in those groups, or you do not want to wait, you can have it privately at the pharmacy.
Two injections in the upper arm, two to six months apart. Both doses are needed for full protection. A sore arm, tiredness and a mild fever for a day or two are common and are a sign the vaccine is working.
You can still be vaccinated once the rash has fully healed, and it is worth doing, because shingles can come back.
