Malaria kills, and the UK sees over a thousand imported cases a year, most in people visiting family and friends in Africa and Asia who did not take tablets. Antimalarials are highly effective when taken correctly, and our pharmacists can supply them without a GP prescription.
Tell us where you are going, when, for how long and what you will be doing. The pharmacist checks the current risk for your destination, your medical history and other medicines, and recommends the right tablet. Malarone (atovaquone and proguanil) is taken daily from two days before travel to seven days after; doxycycline is daily from two days before to four weeks after. Other options exist for longer trips or particular destinations.
Tablets are priced individually so you pay only for the length of your trip. Malarone is £3.00 a tablet, doxycycline £0.65 a capsule, and a children’s Malarone tablet £1.25. There is no consultation fee.
Bite prevention matters as much: repellent with DEET, covering up at dusk and dawn, and a treated net. Book early if you also need travel vaccines, as some courses take weeks to complete.
